Melt the butter in a saucepan on medium low heat as a start. Stir in flour to form a paste.
Add water, white sugar and brown sugar and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.
Add cinnamon and ground clove. Stir constantly so all the ingredients combine well.
Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. You could either: 1. Cover with a lattice crust and gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off. 2. OR you could just fill the crust with the apples and slightly poor the sugar – butter liquid over the apples and top with a crust. Make 4 cuts on top.
Butter the crust on top before putting it in the oven so that it does not burn/dry out.
Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F. Continue baking for about 40 to 45 minutes or until apples are soft.
Notes
Personally I prefer to use aluminum foil under the pie pan so that if the sugar liquid overflows, it will make the clean-up much easier.
